Denmark, June 2010

I flew from Gothenburg, Sweden to Liverpool, England by way of Copenhagen, Denmark. I planned it this way so that I would have enough of a layover to visit Copenhagen – 7 hours. The airport is only 10 minutes from the city centre by train. During my visit, I did a walking tour to the major sights. There was just one small problem – it was very hot (about 30 degrees). Normally this is no big deal but when you are carrying 8kg around (my backpack and purse combined) it makes for a workout as opposed to a stroll through Copenhagen. Even with the heat, I managed to see some interesting sights!

1. Strøget – the main (and busiest) pedestrian street, lined with expensive shops and cafes. Apparently it is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe (1080m) and always packed with tourist.

2. The Tivoli – a large outdoor amusement park (rides and games) in the centre of the city. It is apparently one of the oldest in Europe.

3. Nyhavn – the old harbor area with many restaurants etc… It is a very beautiful area along the docks and also very very expensive – a cup of coffee or tea will run you about $6.00. This is me with the cafes and buildings of Nyhavn in the background. (btw, I've become very comfortable with asking other tourists to take my picture)

4. Hans Christian Andersen everything. This is a main boulevard named after him. The Atrium beneath it is a famous gift shop filled with everything Scandinavian such as Moumin things, Marimekko, Kosta Boda crystal, and Danish mobiles.

5. A large Square (seems every city I go to has one!

6. Amalienborg Palace – the royal residence. I didn’t see any royals.

7. Lots of pastries and every kind of Danish you can imagine.

8. I did not see the Little Mermaid – she is on loan in Shanghai for the world fair so the rock sits empty. I did see sculptures of humans in the canal. They were put there as part of the 7m climate sculptures put all around Copenhagen during the COP15 climate summit. The sculptures are 160 centimeters tall and symbolize that many people will have to flee due to the rising of the water.

9. This place just might have the best beer in town but they're not entirely sure!!
